The Not-So-Beautiful Parts of Labor

Well, we dutifully attended our second childbirth class last night. We are in a large group of about fifteen couples at the hospital with a leader who is, for good and bad, somewhat like Alvin of the Chipmunks, meaning she's full of energy, chipper and blunt with a tendency to talk a lot about herself. Last night we practiced a lot of massage exercises and breathing techniques (slow, deep breaths building to ah-hee's, next week we progress to the hee-hoo's).

We also watched our first video of a live birth in last night's class, which Carrie did not find to be a therapeutic experience. At one point the instructor said something like, "You'll all probably duck at one part, because the amniotic fluid really flies in this one!" Afterward, Carrie said something to this effect: "There is a reason why my head is on the other end of my body, because I am not supposed to watch that happen to me."

I must say I'm not surprised by Carrie's obvious disdain for the "miracle" (why do they call it that? Humans..make that all mammals...have been giving birth for an eternity...it's not really something misunderstood is it?) of birth. You should have seen her when she had her belly button pierced! ...Of course I'm not one to speak...I totally chickened-out. I heard Carrie scream and I was done. Of course she was screaming from the piercers cleaning her belly button with some antiseptic...but I'm sure the piercing part hurt too. Love you Carrie! -Sara
